The Great Flood of 2001

This is what happened when 9.62 inches fell in a couple of hours in the middle of the night in our neighborhood. The bigger problem was all the rain north of us that filled the bayous and pushed water out of the storm sewers instead of draining it away. The 21.21" of rain that has fallen this month has saturated the ground.

This is a shot of Jim with our first floor belongings crammed into the living room.

These are shots of the neighborhood after the flood waters receded enough for us to get to the freeway.

This is taken from the Woodhead bridge looking east towards downtown. You are seeing the Dunlavy St. bridge over US 59. The clearance under the bridge _should_ be over 13 feet. We don't see any 18 wheeler trailers floating here, so we're hoping there are no submerged vehicles. The TV reports from IH-10 (2 mi. north of here) show more submerged vehicles and many floating trailers from 18 wheelers. Buffalo Bayou (1 mi. north of here) is 17 ft. above flood stage and left its banks early today.

This is looking northeast. You can see how close the water is to the "banks" of the freeway.

This is looking west at the Hazard St. bridge. The submerged cranes are a nice touch. The head of the crane is visible behind the streetlight. Normally we just see egrets and the occasional heron, but here we are with some nice cranes in the water.

We have wet carpet on the first floor, but if that's all we got from a 500 year flood, we feel pretty good.
